The lot remains wild, untouched,
out of place. A haven for nature’s
forgotten perfection. Flowers
and weeds succeed, though
surrounded by symbols
of human pride. Alive,
but soon to die.
Insects thrive. Ants
and bees busy building
cities unseen. Human beings
pass by, too occupied to notice
these other forms of life. The lot,
viewed with contempt, awaits the hand
of man’s creative destruction.
Leveled and paved, layered
with steel and concrete. Beams
and bars rise. The lot dies by
the hand of progress. The ants
dig deep. The bees disappear.
In defiance, one single weed
presses through a crack in the walk.
I won’t bore the reader with my interpretation of this piece, but I do hope readers see beyond a literal vacant lot. By the way, I'm rooting for the weed.

Lori, it,s the same the world over, everything gets pushed aside for what they call progress. A lovely thinking piece, thank you.

Very enjoyable piece, Poet!!! I enjoyed the read. Love-live the weed!!! Thank you for sharing it.
Yeah, Lori... the weeds rock, eh?! The funny thing is, once you have done them the favour of acknowledging them and "dealing" with them, they seem quite happy to lift their shallow roots and give way to the real "bloomers" of life... But they certainly won't be ignored, as measured by their wonderful persistence. Weeds certainly have their purpose in life and are a true reflection of the need to deal with nature on her own terms. A triumph of honesty over denial, I think. Love this, thank you, Kate xx
excellent poem. i can see it as a metaphor on several levels. i'm for the wild weed's creative growth that cracks the concrete of how it's supposed to be. Dawn

I know this is off the beaten track, but; A weed is similar to a terrorist in that it didn't act out of defiance but it was only doing, that which is its nature to do.
This is superb provocative prose, Lori!

Unfortunately, that's progress. Brave little weed. Maybe if we started following the weeds example we could impede progress. Enjoyed your poem.
