The Ultimate Crime - Repost from 2002

This is a repost of my first post on AD. This is based on my experience and was my 3rd attempt at poetry.

My heart is a fire, a flame from hell
in search of a healing, a heavenly well...
My eyes are a floodgate of yesterday’s pain
pursuing perfection and worldly gain...
My mind is cursed by a violent past
overcome by memories certain to last...
I have sought for a healing, I have looked for a balm
I have prayed for deliverance and celestial calm...
But visions of rape hold firm in my mind
haunting, forever, the ultimate crime...

Will liberty come? Will healing be mine?
Will I ever be free of the ultimate crime?
They tell me forgive, they tell me let go,
but they’ve never been pierced,
so how do they know?
Do they dream my dreams?
Do they know my fright?
Do they see the horror I view each night?
Some say it will take nothing more than time
for me to be free of the ultimate crime.
Yet deep inside my fractured soul
lay scars of a night that I only know
a struggle so real, of a stand still time
the night I was cursed by the ultimate crime.

for being only your third poem, it's a powerhouse--flows well, rhyme is perfect--i see nothing wrong with it. it's a shattered cry from a wounded heart--keep writing, keep healing--it takes time. any time you need someone to talk to, message board me (PRIVATE)--'kay? you can bend me ear, rant, rave, i don't mind :)

(((HUGS))) and love, karla.

So brilliant Lori! And I know what you must feel inside. Your new picture is even more beautiful than the last. Thank you dear for all your comments on Tinka and my work. Just a gentle hug for you.

Quietly, I say, Lori, that I have now discovered something we two have in common. You have eloquently and passionately spoken my mind here. We never know where we will find a bond with someone, I suppose, but this is certainly proof of why the doors of communication should never be fully closed. When I tell you I understand and deeply sympathize, you can believe me, entirely. My hands are shaking here... but I think I was meant to stop by... for this. katy xox.

the poem is great Lori, sorry it came from sad bad times. I think we all get raped in this cruel world one way or another. It's how we handle the aftermath that makes us the person. The best thing to do is try and learn from the bad as well as the good. I'm sure you have handled this most positively. Never let anything pierce your armor. Oh many things will but the mental armor reinforced can not be penetrated. l&P G

Brings back PAINFUL memories for me
as well Lori. Excellent poem in rhyme
and meter.

I wish you days of healing,
joy and an abundance of laughter and
ever flowing love. You will get through
this great obstacle. I know it!
Much Love,

They tell me forgive, they tell me let go,
but they’ve never been pierced,
so how do they know?

They don't; only the victims of these viciously horrible acts can. You've penned a powerful statement, Lori, and a heartfelt poem.

If I had one ticket
to travel through time
I'd give it to you
to wipe the slate clean
of this horrible crime

Keep strong,

First of all, (only your third "attempt" at poetry? wow.) it's clear that you have quite a gift, Lori.

I am personally aware of the pain and frustration of others who believe we should "get over it already". It's extremely difficult for those who have not had the experience to understand the internal pain it causes, much of it not in our own control. (How can someone control nightmares that invade her sleep?) It is for this reason that I recently began a support group for "significant others" to the victim/Survivors of sexual assault. Thus far, those in attendance have so, so many questions. (yea!)

Thank you for having the courage to post this poem. It is only by breaking the silence that we can begin to put an end to this abominable crime.

Hugs,
Tami

You have great talent in sharing events that are difficult to share. This is a great write and my number one reason why such offenders need to be punished with a greater sentence. When a crime against a women is taken more seriouly, peace will follow.

Lori, I am amazed that this was your third poem. I would not call it an "attempt" by any means. Your powerful ability to write must have been inside of you for years. I'm so glad it came out for all of us to appreciate. Fantastic write.

Lori, I agree with Dawn. This poem does demonstrate real talent. Your words are powerful. I read them, heard them, felt them. Your power of communication is tremendous. Keep writing, and keep writing about such experience if only to yourself write it out till one day it will be outside of yourself. But please whatever you do, don't ever stop writing. You are a poet, and a talent.

The sense of pain and distress is excruciating in this disturbing poem...
As I said before on this shocking issue...the perpetrators of such heinous and disgusting crimes should be castrated....
I truly hope that you can rebuild your life with dignity and decorum Lori...
