The streets are cold this time of year.
Cynicism and tinsel string lies lick the lips
of sinners and saints alike.

Passing on the busy walk with dead eyed glances,
like phantoms caught in a time not their own,
people walk through one another as they head for home.

No time for Recognition.
No need to understand.

The walking, talking dead
bleed memories of a yesterday that never was
in hopes of a tomorrow they are unwilling to pay for.

The whining, dining dead
sell feel good causes with fleshless fingers,
hoping others accept the blame
for the stench of their condition.

The streets are cold this time of year,
for both the living and the dead.
Souls, unsatisfied with who they are
seek solace in self deception.

The streets are cold this time of year,
but no more cold than normal.

Great write Lori, I agree the laughing, joking people in the stores proclaiming that season, gringe even deeper and cross the street faster from the homeless and the poor.

Thank you for trying to open a few eyes that seem so blind and deaf.

Lori:

This was EXCELLENT! You have portrayed well the brutal and cold reality that lingers in the street.

A well-expressed piece.

You ain’t kidding Lori! This is an excellent deep piercing write. It’s very cold here. It’s snowing hard and one can’t see one’s hand in front of one’s face… lol. Hopefully it will thaw soon and kindness and goodness will finally prevail. You’re a great human being and Poetess. Thank you for sharing your work. Bravo!

Lori, being a Christmas cynic myself I have to say this is great. You express the mood perfectly and have created some truly memorable lines.

So spot on, as always, Lori. This "new" Ice Age of the soul is starting to bite deep, and the biggest act of subversion and rebellion we can perhaps initiate in our own day and communities is the positive decision NOT to let our own hearts and attitudes be shaped and moulded by its big freeze. Even a tiny candle flame can bring substantial warmth if there is no other source of heat around - and don't we all need one?! Searing write, TY Kate xx

This is one of the most excellent dark pieces I've read, Lori. I agree that commercialism took over a few years after Christ's birth. But where I live, people are friendly, they say, "excuse me" if they bump into you and I've been blessed by conversations with women and childeren I had never met.

A great pen on the ways of the evil lurking around us all. If ever you find aggravation at your door by any source, I along with the Knights of the den will defend against their ignorance. Of course this will be done with proper channels, and attitudes LOL. If in need, just yell

I am so glad that the powers that be here at AD didn't take THIS poem off before I had a chance to read it. The icy hearts among us seem to be hardening, not thawing. I fel the cold way back in August. Fine writing, Lori.

It seems that life, these last couple of decades, resides within a blizzard, everyone caught in their own "all about me" world. People live a half-life, never knowing the comfort of love and true friendship; relationships are disposable instead of flexible and forgiving. It is a little death when the heart freezes and cannot find perspective in anyone else’s point of view. Poetry doesn't get any better than this, Lori; your images are powerful, your observation, keen.
Take care,
Sherry

Yeah this is outstanding. I went with my father to Wal-Mart yesterday, because it was (and is now) supposed to be very cold today and he is quite old. The store was packed and nobody was smiling, people were rude, zombie-like. I was in an old Romero film. My father and I went around all smiling at everyone, excusing ourselves if we bumped into anyone, etc. I swear, they looked at us like we were insane. Excellent write, Lori.

Dear Lori,
You've painted a bleak picture and the saddest thing of all is that it is a truthful one. Blessings this season. May you make the difference in your own world!
