The dead have nightmares too.
They see themselves returning,
breathing, weeping.

Moonlight steals the darkness
like a shy lovers glance,
peeking between the clouds.

Hide and seek is played
between the living and the dead,

While nightmares run through desolate streets
of forgotten synapse.

The dead hunt for lifeless minds.
A hollow shell.
A new possession.

With each discovered soul
a newly beating heart expels
the embalmer's touch.

The cadence of life renews.

Great opening, Lori, with that first line. I also like the opening of the second stanza as well. You have a great gift for managing imagery. Wonderful writing.

very interesting, i'd like to know what you were thinking when you wrote it, but it seems to me that there are multiple levels of understanding possible with this piece...kinda scary levels, too! i appreciate work that makes me think and search for deeper meaning. thank you!

Made me think Lori, I think when I finish this earth, I won't need a return though. there are super places better, but I guess home will always have its appeal, a little contradiction. lp&h G

A very unique view. Are the dead, truly, the only ones alive?

I am not at all sure I want to go here. Strange poem, but written in such a way that I almost believe it myself. Want to believe it, anyway.
