I couldn’t see your face.
The eyes of a wounded child,
well knowing the storm which follows the denigration,
the aftershocks which trail the belittling words of scorn.

I couldn’t hear your voice.
The pleas of one invisible,
needing, but knowing no help will come.

Lost in my self absolution,
the comfort of my reign,
you died, a single step
beyond the reach
of my concern.

I couldn’t, wouldn’t see or hear
and now, the need is buried.

I second Elizabeth. A law degree puts you a step ahead. Now, as you say, "to pass the Bar."

Thnx Lori and I can defintely identify with this, except for the last four words. Even though my need is not buried, I have learned to live with the sadness and share it with others for advice and comfort, so I guess the need is, while not yet buried, is in the funeral procession. Thnx Lori, for all of your advice, sharing, and wonderful words of review. May the Lord be with you always, and at your side constantly. with much love, peace, & (((HUGS))), Barbie

Letting go of the guilt of such co-dependent relationships is hard when one's heart is to nurture and support. But discernment is everything... some are destined, because of their "hang-ups", to consistently remain just that tantalising one step beyond our reach and help. We will never give up on them, and yet they seem to get no closer to resolution within themselves. Such is the nature of that particular relationship, sadly. Whether we feel we are the ones in control, or the ones being controlled, does much to determine how we feel about the outcome of events when the final curtain falls... a good psychological portrayal here. It's so sad how we don't appreciate many things or people when we're younger and then, as time passes, we realize how much we actually cheated ourselves.

Golly gosh. The foulest invasion, of a little person.
Scaring them with horrors and inner conflict.

Sometimes it is just too easy to walk away and not help. I am sure there are many reasons why people might opt for that choice, but there is a small voice that needs for them to listen and to act. This is a heart-wrenching, emotionally devastating poem, Lori. You really packed a punch with this one. Exceptional writing.
Take care,
