Paparazzi Princess

I’m looking for a black dress.
Backless, strapless, sleeveless, clueless.

I want that expensive, cheap look that goes over so well in Hollywood, West 57th, DC and everywhere a wannabe may be. Of course, I’m willing to pay ten times the price I’d have to pay anywhere else, for the world to see me carrying your bag.

I want a drastic transformation. Hair color, length, style and tease. Makeup and motives. I’d have a hidden agenda, if I could spell agen… da. Like Lindsay what’s her name, or Hillary and her talent challenged sister and of course that air brushed bubblehead who is always on the cover of Glamour and Cosmo.

I want to look like a whore, a slut, a tramp, leaving the impression that there is more between the legs than there is between the ears. After all, impressions are important.

I want looking at me to be an adventure in thought, emotion and little bitch aesthetics. Let them touch me with their eyes, because, it’s like Oh My God, that’s as close as they will ever get.

I want to be a Paparazzi princess, where life is good and it’s my prerogative to bitch about the labels on my imported bottled water and the freshness of my fruit. I want, I want, I want…

I want it all
except reality…

Why doesn’t this dress fit?

You paint a great picture of the iPod generation. Yes, these new Americans fresh out of the egg aren't the Americans that built a country that helped turn the tide in two World Wars before greed gave what made the United States great away by moving our industrial base to everywhere but America. I love that one line, "I want to be a Paparazzi princess,..." That sums it up. I taught for thirty years in the public schools--most of that time in high school, and far to many of the kids wanted to be famous and were sure they would be so why learn to read and do homework when reading and homework are boring.

hmmm...biting commentary on the trivial nature of social life, these days. but, really, has it ever been any different? we like to think that these times are something new, but, i think, human nature is what it is. there are those that revel in such and, then again, there are those, like you, who bear witness, and travel the deeper currents of life. excellent write, poet. thank you for sharing!

... perhaps it's cos if she could think all these profound thoughts and even spell them, she wouldn't be wearing these Emporor's New Clothes anyway??!! Well... at least the women try to look nice... what REALLY gets my goat are blokes who are delusional about their sex appeal, basing their assumptions on the make and model of their motor rather than on the model that stands before them in the mirror... just to keep up the Brit shallowness here! :)) Paparazzi Poke In The Eye real good, Lori. Girl, you can find a better dress at the Good Will store if you look hard enough. Some woman out there got so mad at her man that she threw out all the expensive stuff he ever gave her.

Her trash, a budget shopper's treasure! Good poem on the trashy wardrobe look worn by those who are supposed to know how to spend their moolah.
blessin's and smiles Sis Lori!

OH! I am so glad I read this! "Backless, strapless, sleeveless, clueless." PERFECT. Lori, only you could write something like this. I think you express how so many of us feel about those hollywood bimbos and bim-dudes(?) I've gotten where I can't even look at a magazine unless it's about home decor. Thank you for this one.

You kicked ass with this bit of prose, Lori, and let the chips fall where they fall. America, and the whorld to a lesser extent, are so eat up with stardom, that there just isn't much of anything we will not do to achieve it. If you doubt that check out all the so-called "reality shows." Fantastic writing.

OMG love it Lori, you have nailed the Diva Princess syndrome down so well that it is unmistakable to the reader that the plastic images of this world are just maniquins who move. Give me a girl in a cowboy hat, faded jeans and a nice smile who can discuss books and writing while driving my Jeep off road anyday. Exceptional write and should be included in the teenagers must read curriculums in schools.

LOL!!! Been there done that!! Glad I got over it. Living in one of the big cities it was easy to get caught up in all the glitter and glamor...being I grew up in and around Hollywood, I think I have seen (nearly) all and lived life in the fast lane and over the edge. Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive...all my native stomping grounds and one hell of an entertainment center if I do say so myself...However, in an attempt to be considered part of the "in crowd" we took "individuality" to mean we were just like our peers instead of being someone special who could shine somewhere besides hanging from a trapeze, working it, over some rich John's bed in his amazing Malibu Estate. Thinking we were "all that" at some point we learned that we were nothing more than the sluts we played ourselves up to be. Great write, rather nostalgic for me, though I have to admit you nailed this one, Lori.

Take care,

Sherry
