The Things I Put Him Through!
How do I begin to tell you? Of my friend call Mart.
I guess at the beginning would be a good start.
The day I met him I didn't know what to think.
I thought I needed an aspirin, or at least a stiff drink.
But as the time passed, I began to understand,
What lays beneath that terrific man?
On the outside he seems so tough and hard,
But beneath all that, he's a pussy cat, that old tub of lard!
I say that with affection, for he's special you see.
He was one of my dearest neighbors and always great to me.
We all were so close, it felt more like kin.
I'll never forget when I stepped on that pin.
He dropped everything he was doing to help me out.
And I think I said thanks, when all he wanted was a trout.
When I had a health problem all I had to do,
Was tell Mart's wife and Mart would see it through.
He got me a doctor, so I had no care.
But the poor doctor thought we had an affair. I tried to tell the doctor, we were just good friends.
But he didn't believe me, 'cause of all the new trends.
I guess it's hard to understand,
there can be a friendship between woman and man.
I'm so glad that his wife and I knew each other well.
We were more like sisters and she was really swell.
We discussed world problems at the table 'til noon.
From starvation, and illness to the trip to the moon.
Mart and I said most of what was said,
sometimes I wandered If our partners were dead.
But we all had fun at the table each week.
Even though we never gave our partners a chance to speak.
The funniest thing I saw Mart do,
Is dancing a dance that I never knew.
He shook so hard that I thought he would break.
But the faster the song, the more he would shake.
Gee, I miss that terrific guy,
I can't get over the loss, no matter how I try.
I'd never see him again I feared.
No more chances to grab that beard.
But I know now, that he'll always be,
Right there when I need him, aside of me.
True friendships are like that and ours is true .
I can't believe it lasted, for the things I put him through.
