The Snipe Killed Jason

Every year in the mountains, we get all the little ones together to go snipe hunting.
It’s different than any other games, no touchdowns, no bunting.
Only children that still believe, can go into the woods to play.
It’s played when it gets dark, right at the end of the day.

We picked a snipe that was a novice and the Snipe hunter, Jason was too.
We had to tell them how to play, for the game to them was new.
The snipe took off deep into the woods and hid behind a tree.
Then the hunters, Jason and kids, went next, to find a Snipe they could see.

“What is a Snipe.” the children asked, “you’ll know when one shows its head,”
The children were so excited, so that is all they said.
Our new snipe, Kenny threw a log and bounced it off Jason’s head.
The children screamed and ran out of the woods, crying, “Jason’s dead.”

“The snipe killed Jason they yelled and cried, he’s laying on the ground.”
We all ran into the woods to find Jason, he was sleeping sound.
With a big log by his skull, we surely thought Jason could be dead.
But he awoke, made all kinds of sounds, and rubbed his damaged head.

"Is this a joke?" he asked of us, while we were tending to his bump.
Oh Jason we’re so sorry, he was just to scare you, not throw a stump.
“My days of snipe hunting are over,” stated Jason loud and firm.
I volunteered my husband, after all, he has to take his turn.

The way the hunt was played on me when I was about 16, was "friends" (I use the word loosely :o) took me into the woods, then disappeared! Had to find my way back to camp! A Missouri tradition, I guess! Fun poem, Bonnie...
