I wish I could say the words as easily
As I can write them in a poem
I would tell my mother that her love and prayers
Brought me home when I strayed too far
That her firm belief in me made me eventually
Learn to believe in myself
I would tell my dad that all those years I rebelled
Yelling and screaming battles I caused
Were because I love him and wanted him to say no
Wanted him to be my dad
In actions as well as in name
I would tell my son that as much as it hurts
To know he is in a prison cell
I have slept better at night
Knowing where he is and that he is alive
I would tell my daughter, my precious daughter Deb
That my anger isn’t because I don’t understand
Its because I understand too well
And I know where her life is going
I’ve been there and I want to spare her the pain
And Susie, my youngest one, the one who never goes wrong
I’d tell her how much it means
To know she is always there, her home and her family
With their door and their hearts open to me
I would tell them all how much I love them
And how my life is because of them
Everything I have finally done and finally become
Is because I love them so much
If I could only say the words
Like I write them in a poem
... I bet you would have no need to show them this poem, Sue, because it would be my guess that, if they are anything like you - and they must be! - they already know far more than either YOU have been prepared to tell THEM, or than THEY have been prepared to tell YOU thus far... but, maybe, tomorrow can be different if you want it to be... there is always a risk in "saying it like it is", but I have started to work on the basis of "never leaving it too late to show appreciation" and I have been surprised at how well people respond, although my brother said he thought he had gone to his own funeral when I wrote him a "love letter!" once! Guess it can work both ways, but is worth it. Whatever... you have really touched ME with this honest declaration. Brava! This action speaks volumes and more, as well as the words. TY Kate xx
Wow, this is so simple and true. And as a mom and grandmother myself, sometimes the hurt has to happen for the regrowth and experience to take place. All is done in love, for we know not what the morrow brings. All we know is to love.
Too bad more people aren't brave enough to show it before it's too late, from personal experience.
Thanks for the reminder Sue,
