He told me I was special, I was his number one
I swooned at his romantic words so sweet
Until I found out about ladies two thru twelve
I found that being number one only meant
I was temporarily at the head of the pack
A target for all their darts and spite
I learned a lesson not soon forgot
Being his number one was not so hot
He told me I was always on his mind
I took it as words of love and faith
Till I found out what he really meant
He was always remembering to call
To tell me he would be out all night
He always thought up excuses that he knew
Would hit me just exactly right
Of course, if you asked him, he was doing it all
Out of loyalty, wouldn’t want to hurt me
And what I didn’t know…..you know the rest
So being on his mind was not the best
He said I would always be in his heart
I believed he would love me forever
Thru problems and good times, he would stay
I was sure he was mine till I was old and gray
Til I listened to how he talked of loves
And ladies in his past, he spoke
With love in his voice, and I finally saw
He’d forgotten whether they were short or tall
But in his heart, he still loved them all
