It was peaceful here
Before the wars came
Before bombs started dropping
Every time you opened your mouth
There is havoc here
Now that snipers are behind every word
Ready to shoot me down
Before I even begin to speak
It hasn't always been so
There was a calm before the storm
That has blown down every rampart
That our love had built toward this day
It was quiet
Before the hailstorm of bitterness
That pounds away at us
In every conversation
It was peaceful here at one time
Now its devastation
As I try to pick up the pieces
Of a world gone wrong

Nicely done! Works as a metaphor or reality. Either way, it's scary.

Someday, God promises that will no longer be.
It is a hope that keeps sustaining me, as I read
the terrible headlines of today.
