Its just a picture
Three young men
Standing side by side
Holding steins of beer
Nothing unusual
Except that one of them
The red headed one on the left
He’s the father I never knew
Gone before I was born
So it’s all I have
Of the man who gave me life
Just a picture
He’s the one…there on the left
Do I have his eyes
His hair
Do I sound like him
Do I have his smile
No I have nothing of him
Except his genes
And this picture of three young men
He’s the one on the left

Heart touching, so sad you missed having him physically with you. This one reahes deep within your heart and touches mine.

A very deep write. Hidden feelings deep within you that only you know the sentiments exist for the father you've never met. Does he know you exist? That's the question.

Well-penned and well-expressed.

This is a powerful piece. Strange how that works,
but very sad really.

Sue, you manage to strike just the right chord here to allow anyone to enter into what the experience must be like for you. Really excellent write. Ditto Ed's comments below. Happy New Year to you! Dawn

You do have something of him - definitely his genes, and definitely his picture, and probably a little of his essence in your soul.

Who knows, maybe he liked poetry also. That would be a legacy, of sorts. This is wonderful, Sue.

This makes me wonder what happenned on the left? Did your father die before your birth, or did he run away? With death, keep searching, you'll find each other, somehow, someway. If he ran, be at peace, it was his lose, not yours. This poem is... a poem which can be read and reread, always finding a different answer, and a different question. Well done...

ohhhhhhh
this pulls at the heart
but you can fill in the blanks..........
follow where your heart tells you to relate.....
and never lose that picture, keep in it your heart......and get copies made.......

Deeply felt Sue, your emotions held in check, but
the regretful, missed relationship comes through!
Excellent poem!

This is a chilling recollection Sue and my heart goes out to you for the Father you never knew. He missed having a wonderful daughter to love and cherish.

It's either sad or a blessing to have nothing of him. Well done.

Some do not have that but it is sad to read no less. I had my father until I turned 34.
