I was sitting here
Daydreaming
Thinking of God knows what
When suddenly I became nervous
Almost scared
Of what
I don’t know
A loss of some kind I think
But I’m not sure who
Or what I am afraid of losing
The fear was vague
Like the feeling you have
Of being watched
When no one else is near
I shivered
Not liking this feeling
Of being vulnerable
Of being alone
That’s the feeling! I thought
I was feeling alone
It wasn’t what I feared losing
That was bothering me now
It was what was already gone
I was alone

Feeling vulnerable and alone - feelings most of us have felt at one time or another - and your poem delivers its message quite powerfully, Sue.

Sue you have such an amazing way, with simplicity, of getting to the heart of complex emotions. You'd make a great counselor, you have the intuit nature.

Enjoyed this, bringing back memories of my early sobriety. I finally learned - that I may be alone, but I'm never lonely.

Hi Sue:

I think this kind of feeling do surfaces amongst many people, especially those who are lonely; or those who live alone. I also had fear at one time, but not about loneliness, the feeling just come and go, and sometimes the fear is so short-lived that I might not even noticed that I had feared, except for that vulnerable moment. It is just normal.

But then the best to fight it is to find out why you were alone. Perhaps to get acquainted with some people to become friends would help. It does not have to be friends of love, casual friends who would pop in to see you; or call you on the phone would do as well to take your mind off from loneliness. Sometimes, perhaps your friends might need this too.

Gosh! What am I? and who am I?...You'd think I'm an expert already! No, I was just supposed to comment on your poem...

It's a very thought-provoking piece, it also is very realistic. Leaves the readers to ponder about themselves. Look what comments you have already on this poem! - A good piece!

I think we have all been there, Sue. Sometimes that unsettling feeling of overwhelming emotion just takes hold. Very nice write.
