We were standing smack in the middle of our own reality
It wasn’t pretty
Hell, it was a long way from pretty
But it was ours
The mess we made and the mess we would have to clean up
We called it marriage
Because we stood in front of a minister
Back when we still believed in fairy tales
And he said the words
And we repeated them
Word for word, so why didn’t it work
Till death do us part seemed so possible back then
Before the huge awakening
Before we found ourselves hip deep in lies
And we weren’t even the ones telling them
We believed the hype
And we believed our parents
We believed the minister and everyone who wished us well
We believed in happily ever after
Before
When we still believed in love
And now…we believe in very little
Except that this is going to be ugly
This reality called divorce

They are always the nightmare of the relationship my folks split it was hard. You have captured it well especially in the ending.
Sue, I been there too and like my fellow reviewers also know their is life afterr divorce, the beauty of this poem is that you are not laying blame but accepting that the reality in any relationship is that it is a gamble and might fail. However if we don't try we never succeed. Good write

your words are well written, but the subject is very sad. I had every reason to hate my ex-husband. But, I still cried for two years after it ended. I am living proof that there is happiness after divorce. Life is much better now.

You know no matter how civil divorces are claimed to be it still is ugly. You put this one rather well.
She was quite capable of taking care of herself...She appreciated everything he was doing for her and the Grandmothers Four, but she needed his help, not for him to take over.
