Another day on these sidewalks
Sometimes my feet feel like they won’t go another step
But I know I have no choice
This is my life
I guess I chose it somewhere along the way
Although I can’t remember making the choice
Was it that day I smoked my first pipe of crack
Or when they finally fired me from my job
Was it when I lost my last apartment
Or the day a friend snubbed me on the street
I know at some point I gave up
And accepted this as my fate
Streetwalking is not the career I envisioned for myself
But it is what I have
And all I have…my family doesn’t want to see me
My mother loves me
But can’t stand to see what I’ve become
My friends are both embarrassed and critical
They don’t want to be bothered
Sometimes I have a place to sleep
Sometimes I just walk around
I was beautiful once
Not anymore
Now I’m just sad
And lost
Well done Sue, I do volunteer work with a lot of the homeless and from my own past I know it is a very small leap between being an employed productive citizen to being a homeless person. People actually believe that it could never happen to them. Boy are they wrong. Thanks for humanizing the plight of these people Sue.
