She came up from the streets
Past the gangs and the gangsters
Keeping her head high
And her heart to herself
She cried at night
While her mother worked the streets
Her daddy long gone
To a needle and jails
She had nothing to dream on
And nothing to believe in
But she kept her head high
And her heart to herself
She read and she learned
And she fought herself free
With nothing but knowledge
And a fierce sense of pride
She kept her head high
And her heart to herself
So now she lives
In the house on the corner
A mystery to all
And a lesson for some
No one really knows her
Though some have tried
But she keeps herself hidden
Alone with her pride
So well-expressed; so powerfully portrayed, Sue... this cuts with surgical precision and leaves us with no relief at the end - which, I am sure, is the intention!! How many are victors and yet still in chains?! Always alone - how sad. But still with head held high. You sure do know how to tell 'em. TY Kate xx
Knowledge increases power. The best thing she had acquired.
A lot of us are her position. Isolated, lonely, just working silently
to obliterate whatever shame that may have dogged her path. Sue, you have touched something in my heart right now. I feel like crying.

Excellent write! Sometimes the only thing we have left is our dignity and identity of self, and this needs to be fiercly protected. Unfortunately, like everything, it comes at a cost to ourselves...

As a matter of fact I wonder how many of my own family REALLY knows me for who I really am....not the joker but the deeper side of me!!
A powerful piece, Sue. I think sometimes walls are truly needed for self protection, but at other times they truly do keep us far too isolated from one another.

Sue--nicely done. I like how this ended with her pride intact. Coping skills and armor aren't so bad when protection is needed.
