Well Enough Alone

I’ve spent too many hours reviewing my past
To find anything new or newsworthy in it
No more lessons to be learned
Or wisdom to be gleaned
I’ve trampled the paths of my history
Until they are trodden and faded trails
Leading me no where
Except here
Wondering where to go
From this day on
I sit with a full pack of cigarettes
And a bottle of rum
Never open either
But they help me think
And maybe I get some weird thrill
From thinking that someday I might
But no, if I’ve learned anything at all
From these years of introspection
It’s this
Leave well enough alone
Look for some other way to ruin my life
If ruin it I must
But don’t go backwards
Never go back
I shove the cigarettes farther back on the table
And rearrange the bottle
So the light hits it just right
And I sigh
Leave well enough alone

Good for you for having such strength.
It's from this point that you can be confident
as you forge new paths to your dreams.
May your journey be filled with Light and Love.

Blessings,
Joseph

No ciggies...no rum...not even a plum to boost my muse...but heck here I am reviewing and not my life for a chance...lol!!

Thanks for sharing Sue!!

Keep that bottle unopen....or you might need a "Hangover" pill...that and any thrill I believe!!

I never smoked, but the rum...? Man that would be rough to have that staring me in the face...though I try to remember the feeling I would have the next day...gawd how I hated hangovers...Thanks for the boost...Ed

this was a great read, but i have to admit, i chuckled to myself, picturing you arguing with yourself, like rehearsing for an argument with a lover, about ripping open those smokes and puffing away like a dragon with tourette's syndrome. don't ask....

respect and miles of admiration,
-A.

I don't know Sue this is a write that says a lot but I think also hides a lot. I quit smoking 4 years ago but I would not torment myself by sitting with a pack of cigarettes in front of me without wanting to cause myself a measure of pain, the same with the rum. If you are testing your endurance I think a lover may still be your better bet, harder on your heart but easier on your health.

Sue,

Always forge ahead. What's past is past, keep looking forward. I agree, dream big dreams and make them come true. :)

An excellent, reflective, thought provoking piece--thank you!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :)

We are alive when we keep life as a forward motion, Sue. Whatever is behind us is dyed in the wool, we can do nothing to change it. The future is new and we have the ability to shape it into anything we honestly desire. Dream big dreams and then make them happen. You have penned a wonderful message here for all of us.
Take care,
Sherry
