Confession

I started to say this isn't about me, but I guess in some way it is, a long past romance, a few ill-chosen words, and all you have are ashes...

I have a confession to make
No coercion involved
No one has offered me a deal
I tell this of my own free will
I am a killer
Not cold blooded
It certainly hurt me at the time
When I realized I had no choice
But to carry out the crime
Murder in the first degree
I killed all his hopes
And several of my dreams
With a few ill chosen words
Spoken in the heat of the moment
The wrong thing at the wrong time
And it was all dead
Just that quickly
I killed our love
And sentenced myself
To a life of regret

Regret...How we all hate that word! Its a lesson learn the hard way... you are not alone with this thought.

Powerful write Sue, we are always accountable for our actions, good or bad, but we all make mistakes, part of being human, you're certainly not alone...best wishes Andrea

It is amazing how quickly we can ruin what has taken such a long time to build. Some words cut too deeply for the scar a ever form; they bleed on forever. Try though we may, we can never take back those cruel words spoken in haste or in a moment of heated argument. Very good write with a strong message.
Take care,
Sherry

Words are very powerful depending on who utters them and the intent behind them. You express this well in this poem, Sue. Thank you. Love and peace to you. Regis

wow..powerful and emotive..sticks and stones may break our bones but words will surely kill...your honesty was appreciated although I know as a writer sometimes it can be difficult to put all of yourself out "THERE"...many hugs to you!

Sometimes it's just that fast, Sue, but never just that simple. I'm quick draw McGraw when it comes to a tongue-lashing, but I wish I'd drawn my sword sooner in marriage or at least not sheathed it so often. I would've been out of misery a lot sooner. LOL. However, my mouth didn't do me in on that one, probably lack of mouth. Still, I know what you mean. Smart to put on the disclaimer about the timing. People have assumed my recent poem "You Are Now A Poem" is about someone in particular. Uh, why do they think I have a love life? Imagination is key for a writer. Hehehe.

I am sure you speak for us all here, Sue... what is "out there" can never be taken back - forgiven, yes, perhaps, but forgotten?! Noooooooo! I am so sorry for your pain - and his, but, in his turn, he has probably, like the rest of us, done the same, or similar. We've got to let it go and resolve to learn, I guess. TY... reminds me to zipper up a bit... nigh on impossible, perhaps, but I should resolve to try. LOL Kate xx

Awesome power in this.
For some reason, perhaps the pending Mother's Day- I keep quoting my mother.
For this poem-my mother used to say, "You just missed a good opportunity to keep your mouth shut."

"Words like violence, break the silence" - Depeche Mode

So true. We are all wordsmiths in our own rights. The very tool we use to comfort, console, search, sing, and ponder can also be used for ill. And can injure a thousand times dearer than a fist.

Strong comparison here but no one can truly kill a love, if meant to me it would have survived as well as the memories.

This is powerful yet this happens
and you do need to just forgive
yourself. Regret does no good
and sometimes the truth hurts.
But as Linda says our emotions
do distort the truth.

Fine write, Sue. I think that our emotions distort the truth. I second Eileen's observation. Such a lack of forgiveness on his part must have been used as an "out". What was the depth of love for words to have bruised so murderously?

This touches on a universal truth. We so often condemn ourselves to a life of regret. Well done.

Sue... so interesting to read this as I just last night wrote an essayish journal piece entitled "Confession" and dealing with precisely what you've written about. I agree with Eileen - we are better for the acknowledgement of our wrongs but with such I believe we must find grace and forgiveness from a higher source and cut the strings of guilt. Not that I succeed with that so well... Thanks for this, Dawn

Deeply felt, excellent write! Sue I know this scene, and often have wondered just why it should be that words said in anger, can have such a devastating effect so as to even change our whole lives.
In my case, I think there was more to it, that the person who felt injured and walked away, must have found the out he was looking for.
I stopped feeling guilty!

sad write, sue; but admitting your mistakes makes you a better person. it shows you have feelings, and it shows that you are courageous. i too have done and said things i wish i could take back, but can't. but i must learn to learn from past mistakes and move on and not let the past rule me. good write!
