Commercialism and indeed secularism have not only taken Christ out of Christmas but also the joy out of giving and receiving. Buying then wrapping presents (devoid of the surprise element) has, for many, become a hated annual toil, a time for lying down and avoiding. Guys that I used to work with in the post office worked five double shifts amounting to 90 hours a week from early December leading up to Christmas. Why? Because of the pressure from their kids to meet their expensive and fashionable desires (wants). I understand why you would rather hide, Sue.
