i warned you all that i used to write angel poetry and i found this the other night and thought i would post it to show how naive i was. it is of course, fiction. or is it?

Guardian Angel?

I was seventeen when she was born
They tried to tell me
That I should give her up
That raising her would be too hard
But they were wrong
Raising her is what I was meant to do
I named her Destiny
Because that is what she is to me
My destiny
She was only four months old
On the rainy night
That I picked her up from my sister
I had to go to night school
If I wanted a good life
And I did
For her and for me
But the rain was pouring so hard
When I buckled her in
That night
I worried at the frayed seat belt that
Held her infant carrier
To the back seat
But I was lucky to have a car
At all
I shook the rain from my face and
Started the car
Pulling out onto the slick highway
I didn’t see the car
Stalled in front of me, I only felt the impact
As I slammed into it
I felt rather than saw the carrier
Fly past my face and
Into the windshield
I had hit the steering wheel hard
And blood was pouring
Down my face
I was afraid to look at infant seat
Lying in the floor
I was dizzy, ready to pass out
But I looked for my
Baby
In all that broken glass
And the carrier
Was empty
I struggled to turn
Fighting the urge to pass out and forget
As I turned in my seat
I saw him there on the back seat
Holding my precious baby
Cooing to her
And I blacked out wondering
Who, where?
Was I dead?
Were we both dead?
When I came to in the ambulance
My first question was
About my baby
Was she alive, was she okay
The smiling EMT brushed my hair back
‘she’s fine, she’s right here
we found her on the back seat of the car
smiling, wrapped warmly
in her blanket’
they said it was a freak thing
that she fell out
of the carry-all, before it was flung
through the windshield
but I knew better
I saw the Angel holding her
Before I passed
out
