My first husband was in the 101st Airborne
During the Viet Nam War and I worried
So afraid every time the news came on
Would they call them over, after the 82nd was there
How long would it be before they called him
And my precious older brother who was right there
With him, I was scared, God I was scared
Every day and every night but you know he didn’t go
He got his discharge without ever seeing Nam
The closest he got was an exhibition they put on once
In Iran, back when Iran was our buddy and the Shah
Partied in Hollywood, but he didn’t go
The problem is, he got out of the army and was killed
In a car wreck 3 months later, never hurt once jumping
Out of planes but a car wreck in Seattle Washington
Did what Viet Nam did not and I never once dreamed
So listen, we can’t plan life, we can’t control it
Just love those people you care about with all your heart
No matter where they are or what they are doing
Tell them you love them, you won’t be sorry you did
Even if nothing worse than a hangnail ever happens
To them, you still won’t be sorry you said ‘I love you’
