september 11 has been on my mind all day today, so i pulled out this old piece and dusted it off. We don't want to forget that day...

Her Only Son


She stood by his grave straight and tall
A single tear running down her
Wrinkled cheek
Like shots from an old polaroid camera
She remembered other moments in the past
Before the hell of this awful week

She remembered his first grade play
She had stood at the back of the room
Had to work and was almost late
A tear ran down her young cheek
As she watched him proudly
Feeling her heart inflate

Graduation day, she watched as
He and his friends goofed and laughed
So proud of this tall awkward young man
Crying tears of pride
As only a mother can

His wedding day, she was so happy
He’d found a woman to share his life
A woman to love and protect
She cried as she kissed his new wife

He finished the academy with honors
He was so much like his father
(She shed another tear)
his father too had sworn to uphold the law
and died in his son’s first year

and the casket that held her only son
