When we were very young and naïve
You told me you were put on this earth for me
And I believed every word you told me
Why else would God have created you if not for me
As we grew older the questions began, inevitably
If you were there just for me, where were you
Those times I really needed you, like the day
Our first child was born, his first day of school
Of course., you were working for us, often late
Often overnight, how could I ever doubt you
When all you did was for me, for us
If it seemed you were gone at all the important times
It was selfish of me to believe you should be there

To want you there ….just for me
When you left me before I was terribly old
You said you had to be there just for her
She needed you like I never did, you said

When you weren’t there just for me, I survived
When you were never there, just for me
