Fanning Flame
Isn't the dark we should fear,
but the absence
of light.
Idea that a match
or two sticks
or the hint of a clap
from an unseen observer
can create a spark
could rage out of control.
Idea that gathering
near is bound to lead to
combustion
that will lead to a flame
that will lick its way
up and over
every wall we build
and force the thick fog
engulfing the heart
to part, and reveal
us at the slightest
concession.
Isn't cold we should fear,
but the absence
of fire.
The instinct to devour it
whole, and the desire
to let it hypnotize
with its kaleidoscope of yellow
blue, purple, red, and green
blades, yet keep it distant,
thinking we can possess
its warmth without giving
it the status of a god
or fanning it into creating
weapons that once created
will never stop maiming,
never stop
killing
the very idea
of letting in light, of ever
again being warm without
burning and seeing
motes are blinding us to
the very idea
of heaven.
