gray, grey, anyway you spell it. . .and c o l d ......

          Picture Fur Soft as Down

There are attractive shades of grey.
None have appeared to dress today.
Winter looks stunning in the right clothes.
Today she slumps naked in a bad pose.

Grey today is the gray of a prison.
Of melted and refrozen ice mixed with dirt.
Of loss, of a drop-off, a chasm, a schism..
Bad compromises and dirty shirts.

Cold to go with the grey.
Dread that they are determined to stay.
Almost feel that if I had my way,
All grey would be packed away.  Away!

Then I recall how my heart leapt
Upon spying a gray fox that had crept
Closer than it meant to, bless its heart.
Bring me that kind of gray, for a start.

I must start an album of animals gray.
Minks, squirrels, wolves, and rabbits. Hey,
Don't forget porpoises and tabbies and mice.
Closing my eyes, I watch gray being nice..

Love the way you turned the grey to something soft and pleasant. We could all use that in these grey days of winter. Excellent. Liz

...as you give us thought to color in your fine poetic write...the shadows of the sun are forgotten...and softness to be found in yet the hearts vision.
very well written...

Lovely poem. Gray is like the opposite of sunshine, but there are many shades that bring glorious life in the form of the animals you have mentioned and their "warm" fur. Well done.

Sometimes the greyness just send us to depression; but I'm glad that it didn't make you depress, and instead you have turned grey around to be something beautiful!!! Good write, Pea!!!

You have a lovely heart--finding good things where it's too easy to find disheartening ones. Thanks for the visions!

Your poem makes me almost feel guilty for being under the blue cloudless skies of California. Almost, that is. I enjoyed your poem Phyllis.
