Poem Artwork

As a child I remember you sitting
In your rocker by the door
Watching me at play just like
A hundred times before
I remember how you smiled at me
The gentle touch of your hand
But I was so busy with play
I didn't understand
I remember the times you stood
By my bed at night
You took away all the monsters
You made everything allright
How I took for granted the
Countless things done for me
But when you are a child
Sometimes you just don't see
All my life you sacrificed
Showed me that you care
Oh, how it hurts Grandma
To see your empty rocking chair

*********************************

As a child I didn't realize
The love you had for me
Now that I'm grown up Grandma,
I can finally see
You sacrificed SO much
Many times you went without
Thinking I didn't notice
What you were about
So involved with my toys
I never got to KNOW you
Your likes....Your dislikes..
Or the things you liked to do
I never learned your dreams
Or your goals in life
Did you have happiness
Or years of work and strife
All my life your sacrificed
Showed me that your care
Oh, how it hurts Grandma
To see your empty rocking chair

*********************************

After all the years of struggling
To give me a better life
Your empty rocking chair cuts
Into me like a knife
If only I had realized
How much you meant to me
Or knew just how lonely being
Without you would be
Forgive me Grandma, for all
The things I failed to do
To make your life easier
To show my love to you
I wish I could hug you Grandma
Make you understand
Sit and have a talk with you
Reach and take your hand
All my life you sacrificed
Showed how much you care
Oh how it hurts Grandma
To see your empty rocking chair

Oh, this is so very touching, but the character need'nt feel so guilty. Grandma had a lot of smarts. She knew all about kids, what they did, how they thought, in other words, she lived long enough to know what to expect from kids. They're selfish and selfcentered.
Grandma knew.

Love, Bonnie

I can remember my grandma sitting in her rocker doing needlework, and I remember thinking how bored she must be. But she emroidered pillowcases for each one of us - I still have mine to this day. It's one of my most cherished treasures from her.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful write, Linda.
Hugs!
