We sit at the dinner table with nothing
to say-
We casually talk about each of
our days.
We eat in silence as the clock
ticks overhead-
And you stare at the paper
you've already read.
When did the walls come that
surround your heart?
When did you build them?
When did you start?
I only wish that when you
looked at me-
You saw all the love there
you used to see.
How can I tear them down-
You've built your walls so strong.
As the room echos the silence-
I wonder what I've done wrong.
Dishes finished - you sit and
stare at the t.v.-
What I would give if you would just
turn and look at me!
I look out the window as the day
turns into night-
And I wonder what I could do
to make everything allright.
You've built your walls so well-
and you won't let me through-
So I cry here in the darkness-
and keep on loving you...........

Another beautiful piece! It is to bad that a lot of men put up walls around the people that they love. We have talked about this many times sweetie and all I can say is do whatever you think that you need to do to knock the walls down even if it has to be the cast iron..hehe. I love you sweetheart...Ross

I loved this. Except that I am the one in silence. So I understand how to put up the walls.
I am sure there are many men who say nothing...because they think nothing. But not all men. When a woman talks about problems and man thinks he should be expected to fix them. Then one day he realizes he can not fix the person closes to him. Its usually the case of man who needs to be esteemed and admired and a woman who complains because she needs attention.
Its a hard problem to overcome. She complains and he feels attack. He gets quieter, and she complains more. He starts to think that silence is better than having to deal with the situation.
Even if you understand the dynamics of the two individuals its difficult to break the process of communication.
Very touching piece. Forget the crack, be what it is you need. Attack him, he'll be shocked and respond accordingly. Basic psych.
people react to our actions, don't wait for him to change, grab the bull by the horns!
The lack of communication and understanding. The walls of relationships are harder to bring down than the great Berlin wall. One cannot tear this down from one side...it must be communicated to the other side so both can tear it down together. If they refuse it is because they alone know the secret to its construction. I know because I have been there. Fantastic write on a painful relationship.
How heartfelt Linda. I felt the tears and the pull on my heartstrings with this poem. Gosh what an insightful hurting poem. I know how it is and wish I could reach out and take away your pain. Bill
If we could be patient we would, like the drops of water, erode the foundations of the walls. There is a lot to learn from this.

This reminds me of a French poem:
DEJEUNER DU MATIN
Il a mis le café
Dans la tasse
Il a mis le lait
Dans la tasse de café
Il a mis le sucre
Dans le café au lait
Avec la petite cuiller
Il a tourné
Il a bu le café au lait
Et il a reposé la tasse
Sans me parler
Il a allumé
Une cigarette
Il a fait des ronds
Avec la fumée
Il a mis les cendres
Dans le cendrier
Sans me parler
Sans me regarder
Il s'est levé
Il a mis
Son chapeau sur sa tête
Il a mis
Son manteau de pluie
Parce qu'il pleuvait
Et il est parti
Sous la pluie
Sans une parole
Sans me regarder
Et moi j'ai pris
Ma tête dans ma main
Et j'ai pleuré.
--Jacques Prévert.
BREAKFAST
He put the coffee
In the cup
He put the milk
In the cup of coffee
He put the sugar
In the cafe au lait
With the little spoon
He stirred
He drank the cafe au lait
And he put down the cup
Without speaking to me
He lit
A cigarette
He made rings
With the smoke
He put the ashes
In the ashtray
Without speaking to me
Without looking at me
He rose
He put
His hat on his head
He put on
His raincoat
Because it was raining
And he left
In the rain
Without a word
Without looking at me
And I, I took
My head in my hands
And I wept.
I love the depth of emotion and clarity of your writing,Linda. As for walls. . .there are so many & they are so hard to kick down. Frustrating, isn't it? As usual, I want to write a book. Wanna correspond?:) Bio says wonderful things. . .about y o u. Phyllis [aka Been'ar]
