No video games or heavy metal
When I was just a child
Neighbors were always welcome
To come in and stay awhile
A game of hopscotch on the walk
From a wobbly child's hand
Song's were sung in a language
We could all understand
Mama canned from the garden
She washed clothes on a board
We didn't seem to miss
The luxuries we couldn't afford
No mall, no Walmart or McDonald's
How did we ever get by
Life was playing in the sun
Eating Mama's apple pie
I remember a swing set
Daddy had put up out back
And listening to the lone whistles
From a nearby railroad track
There was no talk of dope
Not one reason to fight
No one was ever afraid
Doors were left unlocked at night
There were no reports of shootings
On the morning news
Nothing was ever thrown away
Someone else could use
We learned respect from Mama
To say Yes Ma'm and Thank You
We wasn't above a spanking
I've been known to have a few
The church bells rang on Sunday morn
It was heard from miles around
An old fashioned church on the corner
Where Salvation was found
Daddy and Mama are gone now
But no further than a prayer
In the faraway whispers of childhood
Where a child of ten lives there
A game of hopscotch on the walk
From a wobbly child's hand
Song's were sung in a language
We could all understand
Another wonderful write of how it was, sure were the good days when we seem to have time for friends and family. Thank you Linda for reminding us what it was like to have true fun.
Awesome write, Linda. I just finished reading a humorous email with this same type of message. Sometimes I think 'progress' destroys simplicity. Love and Hugs,

Amen Linda, Praise the Lord I am on fire! My heart cries of our wondrous past and often yearn for it. Though the future looks bleak and as prayer changes us, we must go out and change the world starting right here at home, the space in which we occupy! Please Linda never loose the fire in your heart nor your pen. Peace!!!
Such perfect nostalgia is always a welcome treat to mind and heart alike and I share so many of these same memories that reading them makes me think we could have grown up on the same block and played in the same fields. Well done Linda and thanks for bringing smiles of good memories to the page.

Yes, yes...I can identify with this poem. I sadly recall many lost summers and days of youth. You have touched me with this write. Well done my friend.

Wonderful memories you have brought back here Linda, excellently penned!
O, Linda, those were the halycon, carefree days of childhood that I fondly remember. What happened?? Sad! Well done nostalgic piece; brava!

Sepsis knocked her down and out. Faith, hope, and gave her the strength to get back on her feet. I am a Runner She fought the river of death They said she'd never run again
She proved them wrong...
Join me as we travel together on the road called "Aging." I will be sharing my personal experiences with you and offer ideas on how we can better navigate the complex byways of our older years. Grief, healing, generations, ancestors, and more.
After a long awaited weekend visitation caused by false allegations of sexual abuse, Glen got to see his children for the first time in over two months. He promised them that they would never be apart again and then they disappeared.
Your words are like the innocent child ,
playing still with each line and every rhyme .
Brilliant .
