If you remember these, you should wonder why
The how's and why's of how they left, has simply passed you by.
The things we all had come to love, like apple pie and cream
Stuck inside our little minds, are but a fading dream.
Thinking back, I do recall the little Henry Jay
The Edsel and uncommon cars, we thought of "lemonade."
Oh, how they rocked and banged around upon those gravel roads
We kicked and cussed the blasted things until they bit the dust.
We never thought, it's hot outside, we didn't even care
We'd pull up a grassy spot, lay back and feel the air.
Then along came frigid air, the kind we covet now
Stuck inside the window sill, it soothes our sweaty brow.
I think of all the things we had, from Poodle skirts and hoops
Bobby socks and bubble gum, my gosh, we were a hoot.
Ponytails with rubber bands stuck high upon our heads
Flailing round, doing double time to Stagger Lee, the real cool songs.
The boys, now, had souped up cars, the pipes roared loud and long
Screeching tires and barking stops, they were the "in" group crowd.
Duck Tail hair all oily combed, the "cigs" rolled up in sleeves
Clicking "taps" down hardwood floors, too cool…give me some grease!
Hula hoops, candy cigarettes, and blackjack chewing gum
Wax bottles shaped in Coke style form; sugar water filled its brim
Newsreels before the movie shows and popcorn cost a dime
P.F. Flyers were all the rage and your phone had a party line.
Green Stamps plastered down on sheets, our Mother's turned them in
To buy a newer, better thing…a kitchen gadget or fitted sheets.
Milk delivered to our door in bottles cold and fresh
Cardboard stoppers creased the lids with a slogan, "It's the best."
We listened to the radio, Intersanctum and The Shadow Knows
Fibber McGee and Molly too, Dragnet and Gun Smoke shows.
The Grand Old Opry wasn't always clear; the songs we loved to hear.
Through static, we would crane our ears to hear what we thought dear.
Alas, things always come and go, a craze or fad or style
Only to become the past…in a year or two or so.
So if you remember these dear things from days so long ago
You're old enough to do as you please; you've earned the right to say so!
Enjoyed every verse.
