This is the second and final answer to my own challenge. I used the bulk of the words in a short story that I posted yesterday in the stories section here in AD. This is a poem in which I used the rest of them. A bit of a stretch, but I DID IT!! Hooray!

Poem Artwork

The Legend of Ol’ Meatball

The ghost of “Meatball” rides tonight

After his fiery death in a freeway fright

His motorcycle, shiny red

His body missing half his head

Dressed in full leathers, hair pulled back

This bad boy hails from the devil’s pack

His gang name sewn onto his jacket

“The Spider Bites” above the placket

And on the back a nasty spider

A scary sight to another rider

As he flies down hilly roads at night

Like a roller coaster taking flight

Not a handsome man, as his name suggests

Skull and crossbones on his chest

He has one black eye and the other glass

Hair pulled back in a bow tied mass

He wears a belt made of pop-tops

From the beers he drank while dodging cops

A face that appears to have emerged one night

As the loser in a bad cockfight

A drummer’s what he was by trade

Wears eyeglasses tinted in sun glass shades

His mighty bike wears proud her name

“Old Rim Shot” sits in Harley fame

He wears black boots, up to his knees

When he walks the old thick soles release

Sparks from tap dance metal toes

He lights his smokes from the sides of those

His wristwatch “snaps, crackles and pops”

Bought with all his saved box tops

And around his neck a heavy chain

In the center sits the word “Insane”

He rides hard and he rides real fast

Leaves those he passes quite aghast

As he bounds the hills with speed of light

His stomach flip-flops in delight

If you look into his saddle bags

You might find things like “dirty mags”

You’d find a checkbook and be surprised

To find a teddy with the big brown eyes

Though rough and tough on the outside

Ol’ Meatball was a lamb inside

He gathered toys for kids in need

And the hungry, he’d always stop to feed

So though he rode into the sunset

And his fiery fate he finally met

His spirit’s still held in high regard

By those who ride as fast and hard

Now on his bike his ghost still rides

Keeping watch by his brothers sides

He rides to keep them safe from harm

And to keep the memory of "Old Rim Shot" warm

This poem approaches epic. Ol'Meatball appears to be so real that he reminds me of bikers I've known. So if I'm out on ride one cool, autumn night and feel the hot breath of Rim Shot on my neck like a bright light. I'll know it's just Ol' Meatball out for a blast and cool my heels to make the ghost of his memory last. Coors.

Oh, my god... Sherry, if I had a dime for every goosebump this gave me, I'd buy out AD and make you QUEEN! Hmmm... how can I say this? Ok, when we read many things in one sitting, it can seem daunting to come to a really long poem... NOT THIS TIME! You could have gone on and on and on and I would have been rapt. Oh, yes, the story itself is completely engrossing... even further, for me, was the sound of it in my head... the rhyme, the rhythm, infectious, absolutely mesmerizing. I quite left the room, climbed right into the poem and rode like the wind! I'm not only keeping this for my library, I'm going to read it again and again. It's a very creative writer who can bring you so close to the subject that when it ends, there is a moment, even longer, of grief, of loss. You've collapsed me. sigh... I love this piece! katy xox.

Your challenge has certainly captured the collective AD imagination, Sherry! Each response I have read is full of energy and joie de vivre and has certainly struck a chord deep in our "wild-side" subconscious. What is particularly striking is that everyone has majored in some shape or form on the "lovableness" of these "Meatballs", which just goes to show that perhaps lurking not too far beneath the skin of the poet, there is a Hell's Angel waiting to see an old lady across the road somewhere... and, conversely, that perhaps some of the greatest poets "out there" are screaming around terrorising the neighbourhood in black leathers!! Cool challenge, Sherry, thank you. Kate xx
