Wages of War

He had telephoned her.
It was time for her to meet the train.
He had not wanted her to go;
He had sent no money.

She asked a passerby for help.
"He wants me to come, but
He has one more thing to do.
Can you loan me the fare?"

Their child clung to her breast.
"Lock him in the garage, and
He won’t cry anymore."
Said the passerby.

"No,
I’ll hold him, and
He won’t cry anymore."
She told the passerby.

II

"You’ve got a window!"
The radar intercept officer called.
He stepped out onto his wing and saw
She was doubled over on the ground.

She was crying uncontrollably before
The locked door of the garage
That kept their child
Forever from him.

I sense that the mother had this child outside of marriage and to the man, it was only an affair, a fling. I don't think he wants to see the child or her. He has moved on. In "Wages of War" I see tragedy.

Society does tend to be uncaring in many ways, but the most atrocious misuse of life is the taking of it; and that says all about war that anybody should need to know -- that it is a bad thing under nearly all circumstances.

Rosemarie - this is certainly a wage of war. The innocent child the victim. Great poem and clever construction :0)

Words escape me. You have brought tears to my eyes. Would that I could reach out and comfort this mother and child.
Blessed be
