You ask me to let down my hair,
Like that is all I am,
You want me to speak,
But I have no stories
I want to share-
Where is the place,
We use to be,
Now all I want,
Is to get away and leave…
You hold out your hand,
But I can’t see the man
You use to be,
The one who said,
He would always love me…
You’ve been gone so long,
I don’t know who you are,
So I made myself strong,
And now you want me back,
Like I could forget
All the things you lacked…
I can’t go where I’ve already been!
Too much pain there-
Too much sin…
Can’t find a way
To love you again.
You want me to forget,
But the memories burn in my heart,
Turning it to ashes,
Wanting now to only stay apart…
So back you return,
Standing so tall,
But I don’t think,
You’ve changed at all-
Ah my love,
I see only what you were,
And not what you’ve become,
Guess we’ve gone too far,
To still see our star,
That use to shine so bright,
In the darkness of our night…
And it’s funny how,
You still can’t see me…
Never saw the woman,
I tried to be-
Though I stand before you,
With tears in my eyes,
How do I forget all those lies?
Trusting you again,
Would mean the end of me,
Think I like it better,
Sitting alone by the sea…
If that means I’ve lost the battle,
For the love I fought for,
Than that’s the way it will be,
Went walking in my forest,
The day you left,
Found beauty and truth,
Hiding among the trees-
Lost you,
But found me…
And who’s to say,
Who has won?
In this battle we fought,
Under the blazing sun…
Great poem Retta, I have to agree going backwards is impossible.
