My Love Was Nothing...

I was never more to you,
than a stone on the wall,
Something you rested your hand upon,
As you passed through the gate of my life-

But I,
How I loved you,
With your eyes the color of the summer sky,
Your hair so much the color of wild wheat,
That I would tremble just to touch you again…

You would always tried to hold my gaze,
And always failed-
For I could never look you in the eyes,
Without feeling as though you saw my disgrace…

That pain revealed the disharmony of my soul,
Drifting through life without a goal…
Haunted by all the evil I had known…

I could never forgive you for letting me go
When I ran away-
My love,
You should have bade me to stay-

But it was a child, who loved you then,
Fearful of your displeasure-
Awed by your wisdom and glory,
Dazed by the beauty of your eyes…
And the beauty in the words you used,
When you said you loved me too…

My love,
You held me too far above,
Stretched my weary soul to thin,
Asked to much of me,
After I gave you all I had to give…
My life became a distant memory,
For I forgot every thing I was,
So I could be for you…

You never should have taught me your gift,
To see inside people the way you do,
It made me see I was a fool,
For falling in love with you…

How sad that you wanted to keep me a child,
Someone simple and pliant,
Someone you could mold and form
To your hearts desire…

But you forgot my love,
That all children grow up,
And I grew wise to you,
And saw the things you do,
That made me feel like a fool…

How could I explain what I saw?
You taught me to see the truth,
And I did not like what I saw in you…

Left you?
Hell, I ran as fast as I could,
Closed every door behind me,
Stacked my stones against the door,
And stood with my back to the wall-
Deaf to every ring and call,
Swore I would never see you again,
Though it killed me,
To lose my dearest friend…

Love you?
It will never end,
I will love you forever,
But never see you again,
Or lose myself in that hell,
That was your love for me…

Reindeer, to be so lost in someone else's idea of who you are is to be lost to yourself, and you have put it into words beautifully. Well done!

Oh Reindeer, how sad
this is...
I hope that it is
only fiction..
Just as my last write was..
Many of us seem to
be in that kind of
mood today...

Oh heck, I am going
to post something cheerful now...lol

Whoa Retta, this is one powerful poem. Yeah I can see we have both walked a similar road. This is simply awesome. I haven't found the courage yet to do this. Maybe your poem is all I need to push me along.

Oh, this is great, really, really great.

I forgot every thing I was,
So I could BE for you…

You tell 'em! How many of us have done that - forked over our very souls. Excellent write, my friend.

God help us we do that don't we, this is one of the most powerful things I've ever read. You are so very gifted.

Are you sure he was that great, Retta? [smiles] I've taken a second look at my loves and I must have been out of my mind.
Well done.+

Ouch! This was a very painful write. They always say that between "love" and "hate", there's only a thin line.

Good write!

Retta, I thought this was going to be a lovely sonnet with a fairytale ending of love and adoration... you fooled me! Sorry things didn't end well if this is in fact true. Love...tis a mystery!

you get so deep into the psyche Retta...incredible perception, to see what many can't see...the subtle entrapment some men practice to possess and mold to their will...
