My Young Friend,
Don't run to me,
I can't protect you-
Need you to see,
I'm not you're hero...
Its just not me-
My Days of battle are over,
I dare not stir,
My scars have healed,
But I am weary and sore-
I can't protect you!
I stopped being a martyr
Too long ago...
Can't begin anew!
I just want to live out my days,
On this mountain with a view-
Watch the children play,
Keep an eye on the shadows in the gloom,
The time of Love and Honor is over for me,
There is nothing you can do-
Damn it!
Why can't you understand?
I can't protect you!
Don't ask me why...
My feet are too slow,
My arms are too weak,
I'm just too damn old!
I can't even lift my sword anymore-
Let alone hold up my shield...
How can I rescue you?
If I can't even kick down the door?
You need a champion,
Someone young and strong...
Someone who still believes in magic-
Someone you can charm...
Call out to the hero,
Whose heart is pure and good,
Not all ill used and putrid,
A warrior who has not returned,
From where I have been...
Ah dear one,
Run while you can,
Find Yourself someone full of hope,
There are a few left,
Under this darkened Sun...
But as for me,
I am done...

Rein--your work is absolutely superior! What a way to say you are done trying to save someone-elses life. It's time for someone to save yours. Your messages are so clear and I love them all! Thanks for sharing my favorite poet. Jim

Rein,
This poem is wonderful. It is lively and very thought provoking. It really makes you reflect on life and how others see you. Bravo to you-very good work.
Retta, this one resonated with my weary soul. I once thought I could save the world, then I realized, it would be battle enough to save myself from the memories of past battles. Sometimes the most heroic thing a champion can do is have the wisdom to hand off the gauntlet to someone can fight hard and longer.
Call out to the hero,
Whose heart is pure and good,
Not all ill used and putrid,
A warrior who has not returned,
From where I have been...
These are telling lines for it is not where we are going in life that makes us who we are, but where we've been.
this, Retta, is a magnificient piece. and you are a true hero.
With age DOES come wisdom.. and that is exactly what you have written here.. champions are not always those who act, but often are the ones who are not afraid to speak truth.. this is simply beautiful in its wisdom, sad in its self-assessment.. but you ARE the hero.. this proves it! Wow! katy.
Retta,
Oh my..Retta, what wonder, leaping upon lines, telling tale, magnificent, please enbrace my words wrapped in clean pure, when I state, I'm taken, stricken and humbled by this piece.
You are a remarkable wonder you are, both rare , fresh and virgin in the words you paint and cast, clad in layered peeled heart, each word marching on. I on ocassion feel led to share with a writer, to continue to unwrap their heart, yes, layer by layer till the bottom ground is found, for therein lies the worth of or very soul, essence and being, yes our richest treasure yet unearthed in blazed glory. Yet Retta, I feel you one of few, that have indeed arrived close to the bottom layer indeed! Yes, I know what lies there, but I know the riches stored too!
Be well brave spokesman of heart, say on I say...say on...thank yop for sharing, youre wisdom born of pain and scar...yet youre hope breaths in high and lofty places of excellence, this all can see! Say on I say...Say on

this is sad. Dont underestimate yourself. Even when someone come to you, just your presence alone is enough

Ahhh, yes. At some point you just can't do it any more. I've learned to teach them to stand on their own two feet. Bravo, Retta. A thoughtful poem. You do good work.
