His eyes were the blue of my soul,
But when they turned on me,
I hid for fear he would know
My terrible love and flee…

His whispered words of friendship
Saved me from madness,
For he often understood my moods,
Without me saying a word-

How bewildered he must have been,
At his every attempt to touch me,
I cringed and pulled away so quickly,
That he succeeded only once-
Yet the pain of that burn,
Sears my soul even now…

How will I ever forget the look in his eyes,
As he wondered what ill-scars I bore,
That I could bear no human touch…
Saying softly to my ears;
“Who touched you woman,
Who made you stone?
Love too much?
Or not enough….?

How could I answer one such as he,
Who could never see,
That I can not bear the agony
Of love, or caring…or trust
That turns to dust,
When the time of need is so great,
How do I say…
I would rather leave love for another day,
Then fall into that trap again,
To love someone who was once a friend…

My lord,
What if he guessed the truth,
That he could slay me with a word-
Why risk this pain of love,
This hell of friendship,
The agony of feeling his touch…
It is all too much…
Rather be this statue of stone,
Then have you leave me alone…

I endure his friendship,
But nothing more,
Will not let him say those words to me,
There is something I wish to keep free-
This shadow in my heart,
That I cannot bear for him to see…

oh, Retta, this hurt, deeply, as it should...powerfully beautiful in it's chilling honest emotional unveiling..in words, and I am, well, this make me feel more than I can say, it...the fear, palpable and your writing, amazing...
and I know something like this and it hurts to try to melt stone, (((((you!))))
I am not so alone, nor are you, yet we are and I have now seen something, or felt, and with you for you, just
a poem, courage within ...oh damn, it chokes..yes, perfect, so sensitively drawn and thank you, I don't know how to express, otherwise, kind of all too close, but am trying...as you, here, awed, just, well overwhelmed & awed...
Love,

The emotion of this piece. I felt like I was in the room with the two of you. You know the fly on the wall thing and I really was the fly. Excellent write. You express yourself very well.

So often hearts are broken without knowing why. This hurt, but I guess it was meant to.
