• A response poem to “Dark Offerings” for Kate Gifford*
•
“Dark Offerings” written by Retta (Reindeer) Mckenzie, and review by Kate Gifford:
(Great ending! It creates a need for the answering poem...........Dirty dog, am I not, to challenge you like this?)

* Hope ya like it Kate...*

I found her lying in the dust,
Covered in filth and blood,
This child-like woman,
Willing herself to die,
And I,
Dark lord of the underworld,
Could see beauty yet in her eyes…

Her eyes so dark and deep,
Shadows of pain,
Drifting across them as she sleeps,
I peer into her dreams and see,
The only one she loves is me…

I took her,
Touched her,
Washed the filth from her soul,
Cast my spell to blind her eyes,
So she wouldn’t know,
Who took her or why…

But she did…
And loved me still,
Despite my will,

To drive into her heart a stake,
Watch her writhe and learn her mistake,
That drove her too early into my domain,
I can’t help but whisper her name,
And watch as she comes to me,
Sensing something I wish I could clearly see,
What is it she hides from me?

I look upon her,
So sweet enough to eat,
Wanting to taste her flesh,
Swirl the sweet scent of her soul
In my mouth like fine wine,
A feast that is mine on which to dine…

She would die for me,
This I see,
But then I would lose,
That one thing,
I have come to need…

So I suffer her to live,
And peer into her dreams,
Smother her screams with my mouth
Covering her lips and breathe in,
The taste of darkness which dwells within…

Silence her cries with my mind,
Whispering words unknown to her,
Making her think I could be kind,
Mark her soul with my sign…

She waits for me to take her soul,
This I know…
But I shall first claim her as mine,
Make her my child bride…

Then on our wedding night,
Her first and only night of bliss,
Drink so deep in one last kiss,
She will forget and never miss,
The world that threw her out,
Cast her down upon the gates of hell,
Where I heard her soul shout,

And answered with a cry of my own,
For I tire of being alone-

Here in this darkened hell,
Where we dwell,
I shall drain the breath from her life,
And she will forever be,
My lovely wife…

Intense. Emotionally filled. Dark. Angry. Loving. Sad. Deliriously happy. Hell, the [oem was a safe and so well done I hated for it to end.
