Father

They called him my father,
But he wasn’t really,
Not a true father,
As fathers go,
Just a man,
I never really got to know,
Until a few years before he died,
Small wonder I never cried,
When they told me,
My heart was cold...
I wondered about that,
Why I didn’t feel a thing,
Wondered what it could mean,
Was I that bad?
That I didn’t get sad?

This man I never knew died,
I knew his birthday,
I knew he liked chocolate ice milk,
Not ice-cream,
Too rich for his old blood,
And Dr. Pepper,
This being the sum
Of the memories I have…

Oh,
I remember he slept a lot,
When he was home,
And beat my mother,
Though he never broke a bone…

He always stood apart,
Looking at us like aliens,
As though we spoke another language,
He could never understand…

I remember where I was,
When they told me he had died,
And I waited for some feeling,
To cross my mind,

But there was nothing.
Just a sudden scent of Old Spice,
And whiskey hung in the air,
Then dissipated,
I looked around,
But there was nothing there…

I called my sister,
To tell her the news,
She didn’t say a word,
Then softly whispered into the phone,
“I can’t cry…”

I whispered back,
“Neither can I…”

This is chlling indeed. Brings back memories I don't care to dwell on. I did a poem somewhat like it once but nobody liked it, so I don't have it any more. At least you are laying your ghosts through your writing.

Painful memeories often have the effect of numbing ones emotions. Just because you did not physically cry does not mean that you did not cry. Besides, from the words you use here it sounds like it was more a relief !!
Beautiful, but haunting write

this reads like catharsis in motion...coming to terms with our childhoods is one of the most difficult things we have to do as human beings. to be able to integrate those feelings and impressions and move on, better for the integration, is a task that most do not even attempt, because of the difficulty. giving voice to these sentiments is a step along the journey...

So wistful! An excellent write, glad yu can get it out.The numbness you felt is understandable Reindeer!
Don't be too hard on yourself, and don't bury deep feelings to come back to haunt you. There's nothing wrong with feeling nothing about someone who never recognized you.

Retta, One has to deal with emotions the best way they can. Sometimes tears aren't what we need to do. Other times,,relief and rest is more called for.
You've got a wonderful heart. Embrace your Sister,,for it is she that you need. Lisa

Reindeer,

I'm not the least bit ashamed to tell you that I'm crying as I type, as this has touched me at the very core.

My father has not been well for some time, and I have struggled with the thoughts of how I will deal with my emotions when he dies. (If you read some of my work, perhaps you'll understand.)

This write provokes extreme emotion within. Thanks so much for this write.

Hugs to you,
Tami
