Where America Meets the Pacific
I walked to the edge of the ocean
And I found the beginning of time
As each wave crashed on the rocks and the sand
They formed an Eden sublime.
There’s no place on Earth as majestic
As this coastline we love to call home
It’s jagged and rough but there’s never enough
Of those spectacular waves with their foam.
They rise up in bulging tumescence
And recede in a descending threat
Still they soothe us and bless us and even caress us
With a rhythm you never forget.
See a storm welling up in the distance
Feel its power as the waves rise up higher
Hear the roar of a million tomorrows
Sense the calm of a heavenly choir.
If all of the saints up in heaven
Pooled their talents for all that they’re worth
They could never replace it, they could never erase it
This coastline that’s heaven on Earth.

One time, near Big Sur, I stopped at an overlook to enjoy the majestic view, only to be besieged by miserable blackflies that wouldn't let me alone. I guess even heaven on earth has its price.
