It’s blustery outside
The rain has found its way into my lanai
In spite of my best efforts to keep it out;
I can hear the pumps at work
Draining the pond that butts up to our property;
It never reached a daring level
But it was well past an uncaring level;
No alligators in sight;
My family is in Europe
So I am home alone
Well, me and our two cats;
They are in charge
And I am their flunky;
In the next few days the East Coast
From Florida to Maine will meet Hermine
In a watery dance of soggy survival;
I have seen stronger wetter storms
And survived them all—
That’s just a matter of luck;
Was pinned down once on Guam
As a typhoon ripped structures apart;
Now that was a storm
And it was 51 years ago;
Wind and rain carry life
Alive or dead
And they just keep on blowing
Until they are ready to
Coalesce around another cause
In another place;
We know hurricane season as
June to November
But those markers are just like goal posts
That errant footballs do not
Care about;
In the next few days
We will learn of Nature’s
Intentions and our defenses
After the final score
Is posted.
May you weather out the storm with the least amount of collateral damage. Every region has its share of raging storms that pit us against Mother Nature. May the score be in your favor in this one.
This nothing in NJ, though it will rain and the ocean will rip at the beach, but still for up here it is only a tropical shot, not like a Hurricane might bring. But I am far enough inland now, about 50 miles from the coast not to have to worry about anything more than a little wind and rain...I feel for my friends at the shore losing their last BIG weekend of sales at their stores, but next weekend will just be big since they lost this one...wish you and the cats luck in staying high and dry...-e-
My home base is Miami so I have been watching this storm (and wondering) from the distance. I am sure you will weather it fine, as you have done in the past, but good luck and stay dry (with the cats!). John
She's not over yet as you intone. It is amazing the physical cost these little storms create. But we adapt and create evermore storm proof structures. While the costs continue to rise, the death toll, fortunately, goes down.
My sincerest sentiments go out to all who have experienced this kind of storm. Living on the edge of tornado alley gets very sketchy at times as well. Mother Nature knows no limits.
My father survived the Blizzard of 1913 when two winter storms formed a hurricane on Lake Huron, freezing hundreds of fishermen and mariners. Bodies and flotsam washed ashore for weeks, he said, and was terrified of big storms. As a child we fled them all (our house was only a foot or so above sea level surrounded by swamp) - the Hurricane of 1947 (they didn't name them yet) was bad, but the Cedar Key Hurricane (1949?) chased us all over central Florida, us listening to radio static trying to plot its course. "The dumb bastards don't know a latitude from a longitude" he'd shout, "and now they've got it backing up!" All the time we're trying to drive in a horizontal downpour on Depression Era highways (which is to say Noways) ... I'll take dust storms any day. Good luck to you and the cats!
Lasting out a hurricane can be harrowing in many cases. I have lived in South Louisiana for many years, and have never ran from a storm, even Katrina. Good luck to you.
