Some things can be powerfully symbolic and they leave an impression on one's soul. She actually did bring me cherries.

Poem Artwork

Cherries

One night
She brought me cherries
She left them on my doorstep

In the morning
The sun revealed them
Dew glistened like a myriad gems
Birds warbled somewhere nearby
A squirrel scampered by
A rabbit nibbled at the clover on the lawn
But no creature dared touch
The cherries

I looked in the bowl
Each cherry like a beating heart
Which one mine?
Which one hers?

I’m not much for eating
It took awhile
But when I bit into that first cherry
I knew there was no turning back

Wow Regis,
Terrific symbolism, I happen to love cherries, I always buy organic cherries from the local farmer's market when they are in season. I freeze them and eat them for snacks throughtout the year. After reading your poem, I will have a new image in my mind from now on.

Regis,

I have a poem that delves into the (naughty) symbolism of cherries so you are so right.... I like how none dared to touch these cherries. The last verse makes them sound dangerous, like Eve taking the apple from the Tree~ Hugs:) Sheila

Who was it that said that we only have one bite at the cherry? Obviously someone who did turn back. Something of the MaCarthur's Park came to mind as I read this succinct piece: 'Someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think that I can take it, For it took so long to bake it, And I'll never have that recipe again, Oh no'
Nice touch using red to create both mood and tone.
