True story....

Poem Artwork

They Soar No More

From this mountaintop
Like tropical fish
In the sea of the sky
They used to float
Into the arms of the wind
Hanging below
Brightly coloured membranes
They thrilled
Some said they kissed the clouds
Some said they saw angels
Gliding on the thermals
They soared like eagles
Rising falling rising
Circling in silence
Above the emerald fields
Where soon they would alight

The emerald fields are gone
Replaced by simmering blacktop
Industrial complexes
And warehouses
Witnesses to the progress
Of men

The seekers of angels
They soar no more

Your poem shows joy turned to the stark reality of man's "progressive" mark of change on the natural landscape. I've seen the same thing here where live. It has been a rural community, even the little town, for its whole life until recently when suddenly commerce is moving in, stores, shops, apartment buildings strung out like beehives and new homes dotting the landscape for the people moving in. It is really sad.

And they call that progress Reg. Progress is man's way of saying "destroy the trees and the meadows, and build 6 lane highways and tall skyscrapers." It is very sad when people have to stop their recreation because a developer or a city wants to "improve" the area. In Milwaukee in 1959 they tore out our zoo and a part of the park just for a freeway extension. They built a new zoo out in Wauwatosa, and now they charge a fortune just to go to see the animals. That is what they call progress. Anyway thank you for sharing.

Two friends and I were approaching a mountain peak at over 9,000 feet when I heard this sound. Looking up I saw the wings and the man wrapped in what looked like a sleeping bag, a coocon, beaneath. We watched him circle and catch an updraft. That's when he sailed out over the Southern California desert. My friends and I watched him until he was lost to our sight. That's the memory this poem brought to the surface. Vivid.

Hi Reg...isn't it amazing how your poem drew so much from so many! We all were drawn to the reality of what is and what was.... Many of the comments stated how they missed the green,(and I am very guilty of the same!) while others were reminded of the asphalt, with brick & mortar... Our children are missing out on those lovely times; yet they won't even miss what they never knew! I sure don't miss those covered wagons and wearing those hot, bulky clothes making my tush even bigger...and I sure don't miss alot of other things that I never saw or experienced....There are so many of us now near the same age that we truly do know how beautiful this country was before progress took us over....yet... imagine what we will see when we too will soar the skies with our Creator...and have all the gold and green and water and sweet gentle breezes.... You hit home REG....nostalgic for sure... lindalaw

Regis,
Just yesterday, I was traveling with a family member for lunch, "admiting" all of the new business complexes and commenting about how, soon, trees will be a thing of the past. It is sad to think about and as hot as it is, here, we need the trees for shade.
Where I live now, it seems as though there are more banana plants than actual trees, anyhow. It's sad and in that regard, I miss Ohio.

I love to watch the hang gliders as they silently circle and ride the thermals like a majestic eagle. When I lived in Southern California, there were always a lot of them where ever there were safe winds that didn't curl back into the mountain and a nice meadow to land in. I took one tandem flight and was terrified, so it was, perhaps, the shortest flight in history. Nice images in this piece, Regis. It is always sad when blacktop replaces fields. It is generally called progress, but I wonder how far mankind can progress without peaceful spots of nature to ground his soul, in a world that is spinning out of control.
Take care,
