I know this "technique" well. I do not mean to "put down" anyone who uses this way as a method of getting by. This is not meant to abase anyone; if it were, I'd be hurting myself as well.

Poem Artwork

Smooth

You are smooth
You like
To be liked
So you pretend
You know
People like to walk
On smooth surfaces
So you ensure
Your exterior is smooth
You smile
Even though it belies
The look in your eyes
When you feel your façade fading
You cover up your feelings
Nod and smile
Uphold your denial
With a pill or two
A drink or three
And people tread
All over you
Oh yes
You are smooth

WE CAN BE SO 'SMOOTH' THAT, AFTER A WHILE, WE EVEN 'SLIP AWAY' FROM OUR OWN SELVES. THIS IS A DYNAMIC WORK THAT TAKES A LOOK AT ONE OF THE MANY COPING 'SKILLS' ONE ACQUIRES BEFORE TAKING A GOOD 'LOOK IN 'HIS' MIRROR'. DONE WELL AND ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. Regis,
The gravest injustice we can ever do to our soul is to wither in the driving efforts of self sabotage onto our self to be accepted by another at the self sacrificing of our self. “Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By You?” It is a façade that requires a lot of negative energy & is completely depleting of the spirits vital life force.
Now on the other hand….when we are being “smooth” to access a love or favor of positive expression, we are pleasing our soul & the heart of another’s soul because we are giving of our self…even though we have hopes of a return that may never happen...but we are real to another, and most importantly to our self

I have known quite a few smoothies in my time, we all have. This is a well thoughtout write Reg, and gives a message to the smoothies that their cover is blown. I guess we all have been smooth a time or two in our lives, but there are people that actually make a living at it. The guy with his smooth ways and charm, that belies his real intentions. The woman who cries just to get her own way...hehe guilty. The child with the pouty lip until mommy gives in. I liked the easy flow of this making it easy to read. Thank you for sharing Reg.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love and who love you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

There's "smooth" and then there's ... "smoother!" Dear Regis, you've got a lot of people squirming in their seats ... they too, having used the "smooth" card at some point in their lives ... at different times, and perhaps for many different reasons. Yet, for some folk, the "smooth" state seems to have taken over their lives, and they've withdrawn within. You, my friend, gently and respectfully address this "smooth" topic. Great poem! Regis,
This is a deeply written piece. I feel like your words describe more than the average mask that most of us wear. You seem to be dipping past that and into a more tortured soul - one with no where to turn. I can honestly say I've never turned to a bottle or pills to ease an inner hurt. I guess because I grew up feeling hurt so frequently, thinking inner hurt was normal and there's no reason to chase those feelings away? Who knows. A great, thought provoking poem! Take care of you.

?? technique?? method??? Isn't this what EVERYONE does?? The way of the world and all that?? I don't think I lack integrity and people can take me or leave me but yeah... guess being a sunny sort of person, I like to be liked but tough if not. Whether it be as a result of my early conditioning, home environment or upbeat disposition, this pretty much describes me, Darlin...and no, I don't feel abased or put down by it. Tis part of socialisation as far as I'm concerned, rather than a sign of shallowness. Strength to take the higher road and all that. And, to be honest, I get infuriated by peeps who are surly and rude - as if life ain't hard enough sometimes, why add to the garbage? Just thought I'd throw a few Kate spanners in... In fact, I like being smooth... just imagine how I'd be if I was rough!!!!!! Should I hang my head in shame? Nooooooooooooo. Yep, Regis, you've taken a peek behind the Human Comedy.

The masks we often have to wear to keep things running SMOOTHLY.

And it's because we're sociable creatures, though we do like a grand upsetter from time to time, a loud mouth to make us smile. In fact, when I see an argument on Youtube, for instance, it's hilarious and foul-mouthed, like the Tin Men movie. Peace is not welcome at all, sang Mr Dylan. Sometimes I think he has a point! I keep trying to imagine who this person is you describe. I'd say there are many insecure people desparate to be accepted and look for approval anywhere they can get it. I liked the part about the facade fading. Even when I am real, I feel I am about to found out. I can understand the frustrations of the person in the poem. Even when we strive to fit in to society and be happy, there is always someone around to burst your bubble. That is why I like it here, because this place is full of "fallen angels" and hypocrites, therefore there is no need for facades. I figured there was room for one more, so I signed up too. --- Rockie

I'm not smooth, and when I don't like something I'll spell it out - whether people will take me for a friend I don't care!!! They can be friend, and if they don't like me for being not smooth it's their problem, they can go kiss some other asses!!!!!

If people want to be my friend then be my friend, but I don't like it when they begin to go around kissing other people asses and be two headed snakes.
