The Mustard Room Press four digits Click�Whoosh Outside rushes in Boot heels echo Open doors pass Enter the mustard room Curtainless window Overlooks winters decay Empty bed Lavender quilt covers There she sits Gray head bowed Slacken faced Shoulders hunched Old hands worry Over clear tubing Compressor hums Escaping air hisses Quiet greeting given Misty brown eyes rise Filled with emptiness Recognition delayed No greeting returned Delusioned mumbles Tumbles out Worried hands work faster What once was Is no longer Withdrawn inside A shell remains Fragile�tearful Unsure�questioning In this mustard room Does she think of lavender Her favorite color Over ammonia air Does she smell lilacs Her spring flowers As old men wheel by Does she remember Dad Gone some 20 years Mindless shouts repeat Down empty halls Entering rooms Where life is Just a memory. Was this about your mother who may have had Alzheimer's? So disturbing yet the imagery makes it touching. I felt so sad and "in the room" with her. Powerfully penned!
You write powerful stuff! My dad had the big "A" and after that my mom died on dialysis. Sadly this reminds me of both events but more of the emptiness my mom was feeling. Aging is so sad...takes courage and talent to write of these things.
