So why do we celebrate Christmas? I was asked to write a seasonal poem for my newspaper in 1999 and that was the theme that was chosen. As we celebrate the season, it's something those of us who do observe Christmas should think about.
The Baby born on Christmas As we open our gifts and eat our Christmas dinner, do we ever wonder why we celebrate this happy day? Do we ever think about the little baby born in a lonely stable so long ago in Bethlehem? God's gift born to be the ultimate gift of love To bring peace on earth and goodwill toward men. When the little ones play with toy balls and drums Pa-rum-pa-pa-pum do they wonder why? On a day when a peaceful child Drew wise men who left gold, frankincense and myrrh. The bells which peel through the silent night, were they like the angels' song of joy to the shepherds? For all the gifts and toys, all the wrapping and joys, This comes down to the baby born That first Christmas day. �

I wonder how many people think about the true meaning of Christmas. My husband Jim and I become Santa and Mistress Holly Claus at this time. To some of the children it is obviously a magical time, some know about baby Jesus, to others it is a just a time for getting expensive presents.
