I woke up this morning and the first thing I saw
Was a large ball of gray fur I call my pet.
The wonderful little creature God gave me
To be my friend with a nose that’s wet.
There’s only one thing wrong with her
It seems she missed some kitten schooling,
She must have been asleep and dreaming
The day that they taught that cats
Tend to be aloof and scheming.
Unlike so many cats she acts more like a canine
Following me everywhere I go just like a puppy dog
And heaven forbid she should sleep anywhere
But on my pillow like a log
For seven years she’s been my best confidant
Listening to the poems I write
Oft with seemingly rapt attention
In the middle of the afternoon or the dead of night
She’s not my harshest critic
I assure you it’s not by choice
She doesn’t understand the words
She just loves my voice.
I can honestly say she has one other fault
It matters not which side she’s on
She simply hates closed doors
If she had her way, every door in the house would be gone.
My friends, if you every need a true friend
Take a trip to the nearest animal pound
Because that is where my best friend
I found.
