"Foxes have holes in the ground" and race in the water.
Today is Tuesday, June 13th. It is Electon Day. After
eating breakfast at about 6:00 a.m., I went to the polling
place and cast my vote for three candidates: Governor,
Lieutenant Goveror and House of Delegates.
For a number of years after casting my vote I worked
at the polls, passing out ballots and encouraging
people to vote, usually for Democrats. Today, with
about a third as many people voting in the primary
as vote in the State-wide or national election I
decided not towork at the polls, I returned home
for a few minutes and then headed to My Hydro-
Sanctuary.which is a creek that is located about
a quarter of a mile from my home.
Several years ago I named this portion of the
creek My HydroSanctuary. My HydroSanctuary
is a twenty feet wide stream of water that is
partly supplied by one or more springs, which
flows as far as the eyes can see when standing
near the three feet high by four feet wide mound
located in the middle of rhe creek and surrounded
by warter The bottom of the creek is made of a
natural slate fine-grained metamorphic rock.
When near the mound loud fountain-like sounds
can be heard.
When I arrived at My HydroSanctuary the first thing I did
was lean against a tree for several minutes and listen to
the fountain-like sounds. Next, I sat on the mound and for
about twenty minutes I listened to the birds sing,
watched the deer and meditated. Next, I offered a
prayer of thanksgiviing Then I removed some branches
from trees hanging over the stream which prevented
people standing on the bank from having a clear view
of the stream.
Returning to the bank of the creek, when about four feet
from it, a fox suddenly came running about two feet from
me at an estimated speed of forty miles an hour. After
running about fifty feet from me in the stream he
jumped upon the bank of the creek. Of the many times
I had visited My HydroSanctuary I never was so close
to a fox as today, although I had seen foxes in the area.
I accept the brief visitation of this fox as an omen
which portends for me something significant,
something more than I can know at this time.
What a delectable experience I had today at My
HydroSanctuary.
Your prose poem stirs memories of my forays to Brazos Bend State Park about 1/2 hour drive from my home. There is nothing like the tranquility and beauty of a place by a stream with enough wilderness surrounding to provide food and shelter for animals. You are right about foxes. They hunt mostly at night, so are rarely seen in daylight. But they are almost everywhere in the United States keeping the mouse population in check.
