A broadside for the new year. My father, grandfather and uncle were all more or less effected by their experience in the wars of the last century.

====+====

look at all lines of stout marching men:
generation to generation, world without end,
look at all the lines of strong marching men
going down to the war again.

look at the lines of broken men
forever and ever, world without end.
coming back now from the battle site
casualties all in the morning light

look at the lines of broken men
coming home from the war again
lying smiles ease the home folk’s pain
but the soldier will never be home again

twenty years on they still hold to the pain
a smell or a sound and they’re back there again.
they march with their ghosts by night, and by day
but a sip of gin keeps the specters at bay:

they freely admit behind he closed door
it’s not quite the life they were fighting for.

look at the lines of old marching men:
remembering when, remembering when
year by year they grow fewer abd fewer. .
as they go home from the war at last

look at the lines of young marching men
generation to generation world without end
look at the lines of young marching men
going down to the wars again …

I couldn't have said it better than the reviewer below me, Mr. Bennett Hooper, but here goes. War is dehumanizing and I think too that idealist thinking is just a bad, for it is not based on reality; and oh the losses we all experience by wars for any reason.
In respect, J'nia

Dear John as long as men cling to illusions rather than the reality of humanity's greatest gift which is love our wars will unending go on. My heart lies with the soldiers who fight for the unattainable. A provoking write my friend. Peace, and blessings. In gratitude forever for your caring and sharing. "Mikii"

My Daddy, my Daddy's four brothers, my Mom's eldest brother, my cousins, my brother, as well as myself joined that long line of marching men. And as long as there are those who would kill us in our sleep, in our tranquility, more men (and women) will join that long, sad line. It's when that conveyor belt of humanity comes marching home, having served, a conveyor belt of heroes ... when it snaps, promises made are suddenly forgotten. No wonder the patches ... I know.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
