Snows of Spring
Blue skies, a wispy cloud,
Southern winds have taken over.
Winter’s lifting its nasty shroud,
Barren ground soon to be clover.
Thawing, cracking and breaking,
Ice on ponds greets the sun.
Cold blue water in the making,
Crystal springs yearning to run.
Spring is close, and they all know.
It’s time to rise and bear to north,
And fill the skies with feathered snow,
As the Arctic tundra calls them forth.
By the thousands they fly
V upon V, skein upon skein.
Coating, painting, the Vernal sky,
A magnificent sight to be seen.
Parents and goslings now full grown,
Some blue, most white.
Wings beating, feathers flowing,
To all creatures, an amazing sight.
Oh Snow Geese, so white, so pure
Your din is music, our spirits revived.
The sight is tonic for cabin fever.
True ambassadors of Spring have arrived.
I live in the suburbs of Houston, and occasionally, especially in winter, hear them talking overhead as they fly in small groups from their nesting sites near Katy to the coast to feed.
