When I was shaving this morning,
I saw my father’s face in the mirror.

He was fifty when I was born,
and I never knew him as a young man,
except in the photo above my desk.

So many questions I forgot to ask.

I wished him a Happy Father’s Day.
He smiled through tears and disappeared.

One day we all see our parents when we look in the mirror. I really like this simple and touching style of writing on this particular occasion. Love the disappearing image at the end of the poem, Gene.

Gene, your experience, real or simply poetic, I experience frequently when thinking of my father -- of how with each passing day my looks are changing, as I look more and more like him -- I often ask myself, why did you not utilize every possible moment to delve into his vast experience base -- many things he shared I passed up as strictly an opinion I did not always share -- I learn day by day they were not opinions but facts -- it is his smile and the few hugs he relented and shared in his last few years that I cherish most -- I miss him and wonder, what are you doing now dad, where are you now dad? -- you have reached an emotional well with me Gene -- and I sincerely appreciate the depth of emotions in your poem my dear friend -- I bid you love and peace -- Jon Michael

The feelings well and I feel them trickle down my own cheeks. I, on the otherhand, never knew my father as "an old man." He died at only 30 years old. I wished him a Happy Father's Day, too. Sending love to you on this special day, Gene.
