Remembering...

Poem Artwork

I stood outside in the sleet,

gazing at your house,

our house,

once my safe haven…

A place of oatmeal cookies,

a creaking porch swing,

an ancient bonging clock,

organ music,

melodious humming,

and stories of how it used to be.

They left when you left.

Now all that remains

are the memories of

a grandmother’s love,

that flows from my heart

to my pen…

yellowing photographs,

keepsakes,

porcelain dolls,

And your house...

now their house...

no longer ours…

Yet you would be proud

of how strangers have cared for

your place,

our place,

once my safe haven.

Does anyone ever really own a house?

Perhaps not.

At best it is a fleeting possession

on the journey of life.

The house remains.

We don’t.

But you have left your mark,

on your house,

on us,

on me.

As I stood outside in the sleet,

gazing at your house,

I knew you were there.

It's amazing to me how the sight of a house we once knew, can bring so many memories and even recapture the very feeling of being there. You are excellent at painting the picture of that stirring feeling. Thank God for memories---and for grandmas and others who bequeath their love to our hearts.

Love,
Connie

You recital is wonderful, Michelle. You did a great job, excellent emotional tones painted your words. These podcasts are very cool and once we hear the voice of the author reading their creations. From now on when I read your poems, I will do so hearing your voice and that is a special treat.
Take care,
Sherry

Powerful description of the building that made you and your precious family memories - and of the wonderful family who gave it life! I still dream regularly of the farm where I grew up until I was 10. Of course it "belongs" to you - and, likewise, your love and laughter is embedded in the plasterwork somewhere. This is deeply touching, Michelle, thank you. Kate xx

Michelle, this is a touching and loving tribute to a Grandmother that you felt such a deep compassion and love for. Her wisdom and nurturing shines in these words, for she now lives through your memories.
Happy Holidays Michelle.

Good memories are hard to lose...my childhood home, as with many old homes on the NJ shoreline, has been torn down to make way for condo's, apartments and stores on the boardwalk...ah, progress, it really does just suck...Ed

I liked this one and all old houses that are passed onto others bring the same memories to others. This is a very good write.

This hit close to home, very close. My favorite person in the whole world, my grandmother, passed away last June. Her home and my memories were much the same. Best of luck to you.
